In a perfect example of how times change, the current generation Ford GT was simultaneously introduced to the public at 2015’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit and in Forza Motorsport 6. This Ford truly is a new generation supercar, with a modern, wedgy design emphasizing airflow management principles, liberal use of carbon fiber in its monocoque tub and body panels, a race-inspired pushrod suspension and, in a departure from its V8-powered predecessors, the use of a sophisticated, twin-turbo V6 engine. Like the original GT40, this latest generation was conceived to race, with the road version coming later. Indeed, the Ford GT won its class at Le Mans in 2016 (50 years after the GT40’s first overall victory there), and placed first overall elsewhere. Production of the road car started in December 2016, and since then it has remained one of the more desirable offerings in the current exotic car space. Ironically, its 647-660 horsepower V6 engine is smaller but more powerful than any of the V8s used in its predecessors. And with a claimed top speed of 216 mph, its faster as well. The green color seen on our NFT car was a special order by the client, and Marque Medias contacts inside Ford say it is the only current generation GT made in this shade. The tie-in with our original Ford GT NFTs: The original GT40 was conceived and built to win Le Mans (which it did four times). Several GT40 variants were made from 1964-1968/9 and total production of all the cars was 133, according to marque expert Ronnie Spain. For Fords 100th anniversary in 2003, the GT40 was born again as the Ford GT, as seen in our first NFT drop. Between 2004-2006, 4,038 GTs were constructed, and today they remain a darling for collectors of modern supercars. In 2015 the latest version of the Ford GT broke cover, and the car won its class at Le Mans in 2016. Sale of the road version began in 2017, and a total of 1,350 will have been made by the time production ends in 2022.
