In the late 1960s, “boss” meant something that was quite cool and at the time, perhaps the coolest and best racing was found in the Trans Am series. Numerous manufacturers such as Ford, Chevrolet, Datsun, Alfa Romeo, and BMW participated, and to be eligible at least 1,000 examples of a car had to be built. Trans Am was so popular and competitive that in 1967 Ford had two divisions race (Ford and Mercury), and the Mustangs won the championship by a mere two points over the Mustang-based Cougar. When Ford’s arch-rival Chevrolet took the crown in 1968, Ford responded with a new Mustang model, the sporty Boss 302. Parnelli was handily leading when his Boss 302 was accidentally smacked by back marker car, knocking him off the course. “By the time I got back on the track,” he recalled, “my car was a mess, and I was well back in the field. (It) was vibrating badly and wouldn’t steer (so) when I got to turn 2, I had to hit the curbing and get it up on two wheels so I could get through the (turns).” Utilizing that rather unusual technique he went on to win, calling that victory “the best race I ever drove.“
