Anwar Chitrakar (b. 1980) is a Patua artist who trained in the 19th-century Kalighat style of painting under his father, Amar Chitrakar. Patuas are communities of traditional wandering minstrel artists from eastern India. In the past, they would travel from village to village performing. They painted long vertical scrolls illustrating mythical tales. As the scroll was unfolded, the artist would sing the stories. When he was 20 years old, Anwar started painting in the Patua style but with a twist. Blending the traditional art form to interpret the unusual times we live in, he has developed a bold, innovative style. He often uses natural pigments of the Patua tradition — extracting yellow from turmeric and marigold flowers; black from the soot of kerosene lamps — and paints on cloth – paper scrolls, as well as on canvas and paper. He wanders around his village, picking up snippets of conversations and painting them into satirical stories. He has participated in several exhibitions in India and abroad, and his works are in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s London collection and in many important private collections. He was awarded a West Bengal State Award in 2002, the National Award in 2006, and the President’s Award in 2018. He lives and works in his village in West Bengal.This is a tree of Amitabh Bachchans life. Bachchan was wounded by a knife during the shooting of Coolie (1983).
